Materials that matter

Why we build with cedar, not treated lumber.

If you're having a new wood fence built, we recommend cedar over treated lumber, especially SYP (Southern Yellow Pine). At J.R.'s Fine Fences, we use premium cedar and cedar-tone treated posts, and we never use green treated lumber for the fence itself.

Ask us about materials

Warping & shrinkage

Cedar is stable and strong, holding up to the elements far better than cheap, fast-grown treated wood. Premium cedar can last up to 30 years without warping, while treated lumber can warp in months.

Cracking

Pressure-treated lumber is far more prone to cracking, which affects both the look and the structural stability of your fence over time.

Appearance

Green treated lumber is cheaper up front, but cedar is a genuinely beautiful wood that looks better and stands the test of time.

Value & cost

Treated pine is cheaper at first glance, but cedar performs better over its lifetime, which is why most of our customers choose it for the long-term value.
